Did you know?

Well, actually I kinda did. But only since I had seen the video in a spanish class a couple weeks before. It scared me the first time I saw it...well, maybe not scared me...it shocked or maybe even disturbed me. But after that spanish class, it was forgotten. But watching this video again still kind of leaves me in a state of ...disbelief, if you will.

To be honest, I'm kind of speechless. I wouldn't say that I am ignorant to the current events in the world, but I certainly find it difficult to comprehend the numbers that flash before me as I watch this video.

More honors kids in India than kids IN America?
The number of texts sent/recieved everyday exceeds the total population of the planet?
There were 5x more words during the time of Shakespeare?
A supercomputer will be built that exceeds the computational capacities of the human brain by 2013?

These are the things the stood out to me the most. Maybe its not even how huge technology has become, because, really now, the idea that we are becoming more technologically advanced is just ....it shouldn't exactly be surprising to many.

As I think about it, perhaps I'm beginning to feel a sense of ...disgust, if you will.
I realize that I do have to take in account the different sizes and populations of countries compared to ours, but it just makes me think that maybe...the people in our country have grown somewhat lazier when it comes to actually having to use their brains. Or maybe I think more highly of our country than others.

But seeing that there are more texts sent/recieved than population of the PLANET? i send maybe a couple per day. But not if I want to have a conversation. Why don't you just call the person??? do you not want to actually talk to them? do you have to hide behind a screen? I don't know, maybe that's not it. Maybe we're just always 'staying connected' but I've heard of people that have sent over 7,000 texts per week. Let's be realistic now. Does that not sound even a little ridiculous? 7,000?! And the fact that we can see commercials for texting and understand the 'shorthand' ways of speaking is...sad. Idk my bff Jill? These short ways to say things are taking over the world and maybe that's why there's less words in our time. Or maybe I'm just looking into it a little too much. Or maybe, I'm just a little bit more old-fashioned then everyone else, but...I think I'm okay with that.

But the fact that by 2013, we will build a supercomputer that exceeds the computational capabilities of the human brain?
How can we create something that exceeds what we are capable of doing? It seems impossible to me. And the fact that we've become so dependent upon these new technologies is beyone me. Today, for example, I went downstairs and my brother was working on his math homework. As I was pulling out some milk and cookies my mom, who was helping my brother, asked me which was larger... 5^6 or 6^5? I told them to use a calculator to figure it out, but apparently my brother forgot BOTH of his calculators at school. (one of which I lended him...and am not pleased with his irresponsibility). Either way, it seemed that just because he didn't have his calculator it suddenly made this problem...impossible. WEllllll....
first of all, you could make an educated guess.
secondly, whatever happened to good old fashioned math??
I realize that calculators help make it faster and just more quickly do the math that we are still capable of, but if you don't have it, it seems as if all common knowledge is lost...Whatever.
Just thinking about all of this makes me think of a book I just finished reading, "The Adoration of Jenna Fox". It had to do with a girl who was in a car accident and the way she was saved by a new technology was crazy to me. Basically creating a new body and saving just a little of her brain. It made me think.
What will we get ourselves into?
Does our growing technology have the potential to eventually turn against us?
What potential of dangers in future discoveries is there?
What exactly are we getting ourselves into.
Maybe it's the unknown and the future that frightens me.

Sometimes, I think I was just born in the wrong time.
Well, I actually think I could continue but for my own sake I will stop.
I don't even know how to put my thoughts into words at this point.

The part of this movie that really caught my attention was about how far behind emerging world leaders the US is falling. At our current rate the US will be completely insignificant by the end of the century, unless something is done now.
